Hi, I’m Yuhan Chen, a Master of Architecture graduate from Rice University in Houston, Texas, originally from Nanjing, China. I am an emerging architectural designer with a deep passion for enhancing the built environment and everyday life through thoughtful and innovative design.

I currently work as a technical architectural designer, contributing to the realization of design intent through executive architecture. In this role, I have worked on a 20k seat&nbsp;soccer stadium in California and a large-scale condominium tower in Houston, where I coordinate across multiple disciplines, cross-reference building and accessibility codes, produce clear and buildable construction drawings, and develop detailed architectural assemblies.

During my studies at Rice, I spent a semester studying in Paris in 2024, an experience that profoundly shaped my understanding of cities, public space, and architectural culture. I also participated in exchange programs at The University of Hong Kong in 2018 and Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea in 2019, further enriching my global perspective on urban environments and architectural practice.

My professional experience spans educational, institutional, and commercial projects across diverse regions and design cultures, including work at Arch11 in Denver, Architecture Research Office (ARO) in New York, Perkins&amp;Will in Houston, and AZL Architects in Nanjing. Prior to Rice, I earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture from Nanjing University.

Beyond architecture, I am a baker, film photographer, and adventure enthusiast, constantly drawing inspiration from craft, observation, and the world around me.

Emplaced, Not ReplacedA Social Life of Vietnamese Mini-Mall
HOUSTON, TEXASRICE GRADUATE THESISAUG 2024 - JAN 2025 Instructed by Troy Schaum

Asiatowns are serving a community that’s much more than a small minority. It is neighborhoods like Asiatown that merge one culture with myriads of other cultures that comprise a diverse way of life.

However, they seem to be easily erased. Predominantly composed of family-owned businesses, they are susceptible to marginalization and displacement. Their limited visibility in mainstream society and slow adaptation to evolving socio-economic trends often reduce them to superficial symbols of multiculturalism in public discourse. My thesis endeavors to maintain ownership, amplify visibility, and enhance adaptability for these communities.

	Houston Asiatown has been an example of this dynamic, with its mundane architecture vernacular defined by its informalities. The community’s history of relocation—from Old Chinatown in downtown, to Midtown’s Little Saigon, and eventually to Bellaire—reflects a narrative of suburban displacement shaped by socio-political and economic forces.

Looking at the strip of Bellaire, one can observe a sprawling landscape and a linear development of shopping plazas that challenge the traditional perceptions of an enclave. In the strip, concentrations of different ethnic groups are eligible through signages for people to navigate through. Divided by the beltway8, the chinese businesses mainly occupy the east part and the west half is dominated by vietnamese businesses.&nbsp;

The site selected is situated in the Vietnamese sector, centrally located along the strip, situated in the 1% floodplain, bordered by a bayou and residential neighborhoods. What draws me to this site is its modest appearance coupled with its role in supporting the community through essential services like driving schools and legal firms.

	The storefronts of these mini-malls reveal a pragmatic aesthetic that focuses more on the surface—bold, generic signage, protective grilles, and shading devices—all contributing to the informal, bottom-up character of the site.

Being a unique site, the project addresses a universal global issue. The current mini-malls are a hybridization of American modern strip mall features and Vietnamese mercantile culture. Thus, the thesis explores the negotiation between a generic real estate culture and underlying cultural assumptions.

Part 2, A Roof Project

The architectural intervention focuses on the roof as a transformative and performative element. Drawing from the complex roof of suburban Bellaire homes and cantilever gable roofs in traditional Asian architecture, the design explores the roof’s potential as a spatial and cultural device. Roof additions are common in North American Chinatowns but often reduced to symbolic elements. This project seeks to transform the roof into a space-making and cultural expression tool.

GATHERING TIDESStretched Aluminum Transitional Housing
HOUSTON, TEXASRICE TOTALIZATION STUDIOAUG - NOV 2023 Instructed by Mark Wamble
Collaborated with So Min Park
Nominated for
Margaret Everson-Fossi Traveling Fellowship (Awarded to the best project of the 2023-2024 academic year from Research Platforms

)

Gathering Tides is a collection of buildings which are aesthetically and structurally derived from the osagian aluminum canoe of 1976. These stretched aluminum canoes are known for their durability and longevity, characteristics that we have transferred to our design of the cluster of services and housing. The base body –the hull– is made by a long thin piece of aluminum alloy that is stretched onto a mold with a hydraulic machine to create one half of the whole. The stretching creates a continuous single curvature in the new form of the alloy, applying the primary degree of strength. This technology is transferred to the design of these buildings, where the panels are stretched onto a mold, giving them curvature and strength. Then, they are connected to its adjacent panels in an alternating fashion that creates a visual ripple effect of undulating surfaces. How these panels are connected works similarly to how two parts of the boat are fastened together. The keel of the boat is now the ribs of the panels, where every panel is connected to each other.

	COMMON CARE: GroundscraperUrban housing for care workers in Texas Medical Center
HOUSTON, TEXASRICE CORE IVJAN - APR 2023 Instructed by Brittany UttingCollaborated with Vinati Kokal

	Collective space emerges ancillary to both community-oriented programming and therapy-based practices in our project. The scheme unfurls as a series of cluster blocks that interact with each other through a series of micro and macros courtyards, along with a series of thresholds manifesting as terraces and circulation spaces. The most pronounced threshold exists as a light, unconditioned trellis system that wraps around our blocks, forming a more porous connection between the housing blocks and city. This frame expands and contracts to house more urban, public programming such as gyms, markets and cafes, and sometimes spills into the housing cluster as a set of pavilions as collective kitchens, community theaters and collective laundry. Contesting the scale of the buildings in the Texas Medical Center, alongside Denisse Scott Brown’s concept of the groundscraper, our scheme is low lying, and strongly belongs to the ground.

<img width="2400" height="1350" width_o="2400" height_o="1350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2228e8b09d9b00945abc1f6ba3ce04da4b88c4dca35be929c6274bf42c32ff2a/research--3.jpg" data-mid="218768709" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2228e8b09d9b00945abc1f6ba3ce04da4b88c4dca35be929c6274bf42c32ff2a/research--3.jpg" />
This projects starts from researching the urbanism of Texas Medical Center, where large-scale institutions take place and an urbanism within the city of Houston was formed. Through mapping and circulation analysis, the TMC urbanism can be understood in two parts: its diversion from the urban grid pattern, and its interface that is designed to cater towards patients. From the analysis, it can be understood that the TMC has become a city within the larger city, with its closed interface toward the major roads and entrances toward the inner side of the area. The land division does not follow a specific pattern but keeps expanding historically, while buildings are connected through sky bridges.

<img width="2400" height="1350" width_o="2400" height_o="1350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/7e1a1d5d8f34b2bb1230801be3db9589c5379c2cad7b8438d883fcb34c49c836/1226-jpg-wo-text15.jpg" data-mid="218768621" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/7e1a1d5d8f34b2bb1230801be3db9589c5379c2cad7b8438d883fcb34c49c836/1226-jpg-wo-text15.jpg" />
Housing blocks are organized under four types, each of which are variations of the courtyard topology, varying in producing different connections both within the site and with the urban surroundings. Each type also frames a different form of collective care, becoming unique within the massing of the site.
The housing units within the four types are based on a 15’ by 15’ module that either forms a four-square unit with walls that form a cross in the centre, with circulation along the perimeter of the cross or an open plan, two square loft unit, with a double height living space. The thresholds within these units manifest as a double layered balcony with mis-aligned, playful openings that can be registered on the ceramic tile façade.

The first type consists of two intersection L’s that form a courtyard in the centre. This type is the most enclosed and forms intimate, , internalized connections amongst the units overlooking the courtyard space. It consists of two circulation cores.

In this type, the roof garden becomes the primary collective space.

The second type fuses the collective with the private, housing a workshop space at the core of its form, with a greenhouse above it. Meant to serve more as a live work model, it consists of smaller loft units meant for younger residents.

The third is a strongly carved type, and creates a stronger connection to the site. It consists of a therapy pool on the ground floor, and is meant to house more accessible units. As you can see in the plan, you can enter each unit not only through the kitchen, but also through the bathroom. This forms a direct connection between the collective pool and the private, making the units more accessible for the elderly, or for people with disabilities.

The last type is a one that explodes the density of the housing complex, and creates an opportunity for openness and interaction. As mentioned earlier, these pavilions become community spaces for the residents of the housing village, and manifest as collective kitchens, laundry spaces and theatres.

<img width="2400" height="1350" width_o="2400" height_o="1350" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/95966bd3a2b1516759618ea89115fd49c103358f051e0023ebbe1cfc3c6671d2/1226-jpg-wo-text14.jpg" data-mid="218768620" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/95966bd3a2b1516759618ea89115fd49c103358f051e0023ebbe1cfc3c6671d2/1226-jpg-wo-text14.jpg" />Renderings and models highlight two narratives of the project:

The first is expression through color, and creating bold legibility through a palette of green. A different shade of green ceramic tile is used to highlight the balconies or thresholds, where the outer layer creates a more intimate and sheltered unconditioned space for some of the units.

And lastly, the project is partly an architectural intervention, but also a strong landscape intervention, where we wanted to create an overgrown garden that almost all encompasses the housing blocks. The lack of green space in the TMC is something we wanted to address, and therefore the garden not only becomes a space for the exchange of knowledge through agro and horticultural practices, but also becomes a sort of therapeutic third space within the TMC.

	NESTED “L”S
SMALL BATCH COMPOUND
HOUSTON, TEXAS
RICE CORE 2
FEB - APR 2022
	What if we imagine a mixed-use development in a Houston street featuring private properties? What could happen when four programs coexist in small footage? How can this mixture make Bissonnet Street a vibrant, pedestrian-oriented boulevard?
How to deal with the programs overlapped architecturally is an architectural position. Taking a position on the small-batch compound, this project proposes a new architectural possibility that imagines a Texas-based food business, brisket barbeque restaurant, to be mixed with retail, commercial and residential programs on a hypothetical corner site. This architectural type should have its versatility to be adapted to different sites. By focusing on how people engage with each other, and how this building is organized internally, the project presents itself as a formal strategy of two nested ”L”s to organize the programs and legitimize circulation.

The architectural composition of the building can be articulated by two nested “L”-shaped parts with an raised atrium space in between. The vertival atrium innovatively starts from the second floor and connects the horizontal open garden. The ground floor and the semi sunken manufacturing space becomes a whole that is open to the street.

CLIMATE HOUSE
SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE

HOUSTON, TEXAS

RICE ELECTIVE: TALL TIMBER
SEP - NOV 2022
Instructed by Jesus Vassallo

A Climate House is designed for Houston's hot, humid summer and warm winter. Strategy for preventing flooding is developed as a lifted base system. A "skirt" as a semi-outdoor deck surrounds an enclosed core, becoming the main form of this house. The core part of the house is minimal, providing the basic needs of the family especially during the summer.

A modular system is designed to inform the postion of the base and the column grid.

A sectional model is created based on the logic of the plan: a simple house defined by its column grid system: one part(the thinner part) that houses service programs and staircase, one part(the thicker part) dedicated for rooms of living.

Community Center&nbsp;
HOUSTON, TEXAS

RICE CORE 3
OCT - DEC 2022
Instructed by Christopher Hight

This project emerged as a result of the exploration of the programs, the lanscape and the democraphic and urban contexts. Situated in a large irregular site with complicated urban conditions- lightrail, raillines, underground tunnels, 10 feet height difference between two ends of the site, and the potential flooding in the future, a commuinty center targeted for this low-income and vulnerable neighborhood is raised.

Instead of creating a design by avoiding the complex and harsh urban conditions, this project tried to embrace them and make them active in generating design decisions. A formal and spatial strategy of "over, under, through" is develped in response to the height difference and the much underused underground tunnel. The possibilities of walking under the building, over the water collection pools and through the interior and exterior spaces shaped by a consistent structural frame system are created. This community center aims to activate this wasted land by integrating the lanscape into the planning of how the building sits or floats.

<img width="1362" height="198" width_o="1362" height_o="198" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cd11ee5d3c28c054e4042aa2e738408254310b42e335cbcc19010f10c1dd089b/generation-massing.jpg" data-mid="164633788" border="0" data-scale="68" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cd11ee5d3c28c054e4042aa2e738408254310b42e335cbcc19010f10c1dd089b/generation-massing.jpg" />

	The broken down massing from a giant volume to three seperate buildings reduce the sense of volume in this huge site and gives opportuniey for the lanscape to engage in-between the gaps of each two building.

HOUSTON, TEXAS
Rice Core I Final Project
SEP - NOV 2021
Instructed by Dawn Finley
This design investigates the engagement of natural light and structure that are considered crucial in articulating library spaces. The massing is broken down into six bays, allowing for the enrichment of spaces. The west edge is raised due to its urban condition, while the east edge next to the existing building is kept low for programs like mechanical rooms and bathrooms. The ground floor is more open and fluid while the second floor is wrapped with perforated panels and flooded with skylight. The delicate steel structure marks the division of the bays and its expression is carefully planned to emphasize the modernity and publicity of the library.

SKY ALLEYSHIGHRISE COMPLEX FOR THE YOUNGNANJING UNIVERSITY STUDIO 7&nbsp;
SEP - NOV 2020
Collaborated with Hazel ZhangMixed-use highrise architecture in this city-center site is held responsible to be open to the city and to be profitably used. In response to the challenge of being profitable through program organization and articulate in public space, the proposal takes advantage of the situation to generate public space needed to link the programs (including housing and office) with surroundings through controlled openings among independent builidng towers. The building mass is conceived to both offer street-scale space for dwellers as well as to provide an image as a landmark to the city. In the project, we tend to maximize the experience of street-scale spaces without sacrificing the finacial benefits that such a project can bring to a city.
